Environmental testing tools for workplace safety and compliance
Workplace safety and environmental compliance are essential for protecting employees and ensuring efficient operations. From controlling noise and monitoring air quality to measuring lighting, humidity, and pressure, accurate environmental testing is critical.
Martindale Electric offers a full range of reliable, easy-to-use meters and testing kits designed to help organisations identify risks, maintain regulatory compliance, and create safer, healthier working environments.
What is the safest way to measure noise in the workplace?
Measuring noise where it matters.
Noise isn’t just an annoyance – it’s a workplace hazard. From construction sites to workshops, the Control of Noise at Work Regulations requires employers to assess and manage exposure. But which tester is right for you? The HSE’s 2005 Control of Noise at Work Regulations define the limits of noise levels to which employees can be exposed.
Employers have a responsibility to ensure noise exposure and level limits are monitored and kept to a minimum. This also applies in workplaces where the risk of noise may not be immediately obvious. As noise regulations play an increasingly important role in modern business, the SP79 and SPC70 from Martindale Electric help organisations stay compliant.
Designed for both industrial and office on-site measurement, the Martindale SP79 is a user-friendly sound level meter featuring A and C frequency weighting, along with fast and slow time weighting.
One of the main advantages of the Martindale SP79 is its compact, lightweight design. This makes it highly convenient – it can be handheld for spot-checking noise levels, or tripod-mounted for longer-term monitoring of Min/Max values.

The intuitive interface allows quick and effective navigation. Its large, high-contrast display includes both a digital readout and an analogue bar graph. The robust SP79 complies with BS EN 61672-1:2003 and comes supplied with a detachable windshield and a durable carry case for long-term, high-performance use.
Where the SP79 is a simple solution for everyday checks of noise levels, for more accurate readings in compliance reports the Martindale SPL82 offers higher resolution – ideal for health and safety professionals. If monitoring and recording are required, the SPC70 data logging sound level meter is ideal for long-term assessments. Whatever the environment, Martindale has a sound meter that makes compliance simple.
How can invisible hazards like gas, airflow, or pressure be monitored safely?
Some of the biggest dangers can’t be seen: carbon monoxide, poor airflow, or pressure faults in HVAC systems. That’s where Martindale testers can help.
Tackling invisible risks:
Carbon Monoxide
Martindale’s CO190 is a tough, high-performance carbon monoxide meter designed for on-site use. The LCD display shows readings in ppm, with an audible beeper that increases in frequency with CO concentration, becoming a continuous tone above 200ppm.
The default alarm threshold is set at 35ppm and can be adjusted from 0 to 1000ppm. For readings over 1000ppm, the alarm beeper sounds continuously with a high-frequency tone.
Airflow
Martindale’s AV90 thermo-anemometer displays temperature and airflow simultaneously. It has a large external vane probe for taking measurements in awkward areas.
Minimum and maximum values for flow and temperature can be displayed. More accurate measurements can also be obtained by taking 8 readings, which are automatically averaged. Measurements can be taken over 2 or 16 seconds, with averages displayed accordingly.
The AV85 is a compact hygro-anemometer with an integrated low-friction vane, suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. It can display simultaneous measurements of temperature and airflow, or temperature and relative humidity.
There are six different units of measurement for airflow, and the hold function allows users to record maximum, minimum, and average readings. The LCD screen includes a backlight for working in low-light environments.
Pressure
The PM85 is a simple-to-use differential manometer providing accurate pressure readings across eight different units of measurement.
Results are displayed on a clear, backlit LCD display, making it suitable for low-light working environments. Its compact size makes it an ideal tool for HVAC and engineering applications.
Stay safe, stay compliant – with Martindale gas, airflow, and pressure testers.
Why is correct lighting important, and how can it be measured?
Getting lighting levels right.
Poor lighting is more than inconvenient – it can impact safety, productivity, and compliance. Ensuring correct workplace lighting is essential.
Recognising the increasing demand for LED lighting systems, the Martindale Electric LM195 LED Light Meter is a high-quality device with built-in correction factors for LED sources. It delivers fast, reliable readings and is suitable for LED, fluorescent, and incandescent lighting. It is ideal for ensuring regulatory compliance and performance of new and existing systems in both industrial and commercial environments.

Suitable for commissioning new installations as well as checking existing ones, the LM195 ensures lighting levels meet the required standards for a safe and healthy working environment.
For those seeking a basic model, the LM192 Light Meter is a cost-effective choice that doesn’t compromise on quality. Built to be durable, reliable, and accurate, the LM192 is ideally suited to office and commercial lighting.
From office refurbishments to warehouse inspections, Martindale light meters ensure the right levels, every time.
How do humidity and water temperature affect safety, and how can they be monitored?
When moisture becomes a hazard.
Humidity and water temperature aren’t just comfort issues – they’re critical for preventing mould, equipment failure, and Legionella risk.
The previously described AV85 is a versatile meter for both airflow and humidity measurement.
For Legionella prevention, the Martindale ThermokitLGN Legoinella Testing Thermometry Kit is designed for temperature testing and monitoring in accordance with Health and Safety Executive guidelines, helping to avoid conditions that favour the growth of Legionella and other bacteria. The surface and immersion probes simplify measurement on pipework and tanks.

For landlords, facilities managers, and maintenance engineers, Martindale makes compliance simple.
