Socket testing and beyond… The EZ664
A socket tester is used to test whether a wall socket is correctly wired and also check for common faults such as no earth connection and short circuits. Sockets are the most common source of electrical power in homes and commercial buildings. However, it is not uncommon to find sockets damaged, broken or badly wired.
Socket testers are not usually associated with testing at light fittings, fused spurs and terminals where no socket is present. The EZ664 socket tester from Martindale, can not only be connected to a circuit via a standard 13 amp plug but can be used with 4mm test leads giving the ability to connect to a wide variety of electrical contacts. The EZ664 socket tester is an innovative device which offers flexibility and precision, meeting the demands of both professional electricians and safety inspectors across the UK.

Equipped with two groups of tricolour LEDs, the EZ664 offers clear visual indication of wiring conditions highlighting up to 28 fault types while also testing mains voltage levels and earth loop impedance. This comprehensive indication system ensures that users can quickly and accurately diagnose potential issues. A standout feature of the EZ664 is its capability to measure earth loop impedance without tripping a 30mA or higher RCD, a common safety device in many installations. The tester displays the measured impedance value across six discrete levels, offering insights into the quality of the earth connection.
Safety is further enhanced by the EZ664’s alert system, which notifies users of out-of-tolerance voltage conditions through both visual (LED) and audible (buzzer) signals, ensuring that dangerous electrical conditions are not overlooked. Specifically, the device detects if the mains voltage is below 195V or above 270V, or if the neutral to earth voltage exceeds 30V. The compact and robust design of the EZ664, combined with its easy-to-read LED indicators and audible alerts, makes it a user-friendly tool that enhances safety and efficiency on the job.

The EZ664 is a versatile tool designed for a wide range of applications. Its dual connection capability makes it effective in situations where traditional socket testers cannot do the job. The ability to connect via either a 13A plug or flying leads provides the flexibility needed to test various electrical installations, including locations where a socket tester cannot be directly plugged in, such as at light fittings or within electrical enclosures. The ability to measure earth loop impedance without causing disruptions to the circuit makes the EZ664 an invaluable tool for indicating the quality of the earth without compromising the operational continuity of the installation.
Each Martindale EZ664 Socket Tester package includes the EZ664 Advanced Socket Tester, a TL207 Test Lead Adapter for 13A plugs and a TL36 Test Lead, a 3-way flying lead with crocodile clips for secure connections at terminals. Also included is a comprehensive instruction manual that provides guidance on using the tester effectively and safely, as well as a soft carry case to ensure that the EZ664 and its accessories are easily transportable and protected from damage during transit.
The EZ664 is designed to simplify the process of verifying socket safety and wiring integrity in both domestic and commercial environments plus the dual connection flexibility makes the EZ664 an exceptionally versatile tool. However, it is important to appreciate that socket testers are not an alternative to the full verification of wiring installations using an 18th edition multifunction tester but are ideal as a first line indicator to identify potentially unsafe installations and wiring faults, socket testers offer a fast and effective solution when properly specified.
