Our history over time

With over 90 years of experience, Martindale Electric is one of the most trusted brands. Steve Dunning, our Managing Director, takes us on a journey through time to look at the history of Martindale and its ever increasing product range. Looking forward to its centenary, in 2028, Martindale is still a spritely company, continually innovating and introducing new products every year.

2020

PDS and PDSX Proving Units are launched

As part of our commitment to user safety, we are also leaders in the sales of Proving Units, featuring a range that gradually expanded from our classic PD690 model, to a range of Proving Units. These latest versions, the PDS and PDSX models are lighter and smaller.

HPAT400 PASS/FAIL PAT Tester launches

 

The PAT Testers range has been increased – with the launch of the smallest, lightest hand held battery powered PAT Tester.

2017

Martindale Electric brings all departments under one roof – in a modern eco-friendly building at Metrohm House, Imperial Park, Imperial Way, Watford, WD24 4PP approx. 100m away!

Martindale R&D facility expands into their own dedicated premises.

2011

MTL10 & 20 Test Lamps launch

 

Upgraded under Martindale’s ownership, with two new models, MTL10 and MTL20 – fully compliant with the latest standards.

HPAT500 The smallest and lightest handheld PAT Tester

EZ150 – The first advanced tester

 

Advanced Socket Tester is introduced with earth loop indication.

Our portfolio increases to an impressive count of 150 products, more than double the number we had produced just five years previous.

VI PD launches
Voltage Indicator and Proving Device – an essential kit.

Our major launch event aboard HMS Belfast.

A really successful day, with a turnout of over 300 attendees, who enjoy a tour of the WW2 Heavy Cruiser. Martindale showcases its entire product range, generating tons of new interest.

Company relocated to larger premises, at Penfold Estate, Imperial Way, Watford – WD24 4YY.

Acquired the electrical test lamp business of John Drummond (Engineers) Ltd. 

 

Including the Drummond test lamp business, specified by most electrical utilities. (Electrical Wholesaler – May 2004).

Acquired low voltage test equipment business of Edgcumbe Instruments and the Metrohm brand.

2002

EZ2500 The first patented non-trip, no battery, no test button, loop tester displaying PE, PN PFC & PSC.

Acquired PAT business of Edgcumbe Instruments

 

Introducing the Metrohm low voltage test division. Adding 16th Edition Testers and, for the first time, PAT Testers to the range.

Martindale’s portfolio grows to 70 products

Martindale’s FD650 is launched, the first affordable Digital Fuse Finder.

FD500 – The low cost fuse finder is launched

Greatly simplifying the task of identifying which socket is on which circuit. Winning Interbuild “Best Electrical Product” (December 2000).

Martindale acquire the electrical test equipment division of Alpha Electronics Plc including self proving non-contact voltage indicators.

1997

Martindale Electric name & Test Equipment business is bought and relocated to Watford – sporting a portfolio of 6 products.

1996

BZ101 Buzzit Check Plug

The first buzzing check plug with both audible and visual indications.

1968

Launch of the classic, patented Ring Main Tester (the Check Plug).

  
Although records are lost over time, our best estimate is that over 2,000,000 Check Plugs have been manufactured to date.

Martindale enter the test equipment marketplace (originally making motor maintenance products).

1950s

Meco sells Martindale and the two businesses separate.


Martindale UK is acquired by Blagden Industries.

1937

Martindale exhibits at the British Industries Fair.

Displaying Grinding Commutators and Slip Rings, Mica Undercutters, Portable Electric Blowers, Electrical Etchers, Electrical and Mechanical Maintenance Equipment, Martindale Protective Face Masks and automatic Safety Road Signals.

1928

Martindale Electric of Westmorland Road, The Hyde, London, NW9. Founded as the UK base for US Cleveland, Ohio based Martindale Electric Company Inc (Meco).
